There is a very specific kind of energy that shows up right before a family adds a new person to it, equal parts excitement and someone trying not to spill the secret before the photos are even edited. That was the mood the Calise family brought to Monmouth Battlefield State Park for their pregnancy announcement session, and it made for one of the more fun afternoons I've had this year.
Monmouth Battlefield State Park is one of my go to spots for maternity and announcement sessions in this part of NJ. Wide open fields, tree lines that break up the background, and enough space that nobody has to think about where the next family is parked. It is also free and open to the public, so there is no venue fee standing between you and the photos.
The Calise family brought their dog along, and it turned out to be the easiest subject of the day. No direction needed, no coaxing for a smile, just a dog doing normal dog things while everyone around it tried not to laugh. Having it there also took the pressure off. It stopped feeling like a photoshoot and started feeling like an afternoon outside with people I like, which is exactly the energy I'm always trying to get to.
If you're planning to bring a pet into your own announcement or maternity photos, give them a few minutes to sniff around before you start. A dog that's already settled in gives you a much better shot than one that's still figuring out where it is.
We spent the afternoon working our way across the park and saved the best spot for last so we'd catch it right as the sun started to drop. That last hour of light does more work than any pose I could set up. It's soft, it's warm, and it makes an announcement look like the moment actually felt.
By the time we wrapped, the Calise family had a full gallery that did exactly what a pregnancy announcement is supposed to do, tell everyone the news in a way that actually looks like them.
If you have news of your own to share and want photos that don't feel like a template, reach out and tell me about it. I'm Amardeep, and I photograph maternity sessions, families, and announcements across Princeton and Central New Jersey. Monmouth Battlefield, Sayen Gardens, your backyard. I'll make it work.
