Here is the thing about searching for maternity poses at 11pm. You are not really looking for poses. You are looking for reassurance that you will not stand in a field feeling awkward while someone points a camera at you.
So let me give you that reassurance first. Posing is my job, not yours. You show up, I direct, and most of what I say sounds less like "arch your back" and more like "walk toward me and think about meeting this baby." That said, it helps to know what we will actually be doing, so here are the five poses that show up in nearly every maternity session I shoot, with real photos from real sessions, and what each one is really for.
The classic bump cradle. One hand above the belly, one below, like you are already introducing yourself. This is the photo, the one that ends up framed. It works because it solves the number one problem of being photographed, which is not knowing what to do with your hands. Your hands have a job now, and everything about the photo instantly makes sense.
Instead of facing the camera straight on, you angle your body just a bit, and the bump becomes a beautiful silhouette instead of disappearing. Photographers call this the 45-degree angle. I call it the slight turn, because that is the entire instruction. It flatters nearly everyone, it works in a flowing gown or a traditional saree, and you never have to think about the geometry. I will just say "turn a little toward the water" and we are there.
Nobody looks stiff while they are moving. That is the whole secret. I will have you walk a path, sway a little, play with the hem of your dress, and the photos come out looking like a moment instead of a pose, because that is what they were. If you are worried about feeling frozen in front of a camera, this is the cure, and it is usually where the session stops feeling like a session.
Not everything needs to happen standing up, especially in your third trimester. Seated photos read calm and unforced, and honestly, sometimes they exist because your feet deserve a break. Steps, a bench, a blanket on the grass. Some of the most natural photos of a session happen in the two minutes you thought we were just resting. Bonus points if the dog joins, and yes, the dog is invited.
A partner wrapped around you with their hands over yours. Two of you holding hands and laughing about something I probably said. A big sibling whispering secrets to the baby. These are the photos that turn a maternity session into a family story, and they require zero posing skill from anyone, including the toddler and the dog. I set up the moment and catch what actually happens.
Nothing from this list. Truly. Forget all five the moment you close this tab. Movement, a little direction, and a conversation beforehand do the rest, and if you feel awkward for the first ten minutes, that is normal and it passes.
The more useful thing to remember is timing. The sweet spot for maternity photos is 28 to 36 weeks, and you can read exactly when to schedule in my guide to timing your maternity photoshoot. When you are ready, take a look at my maternity sessions or reach out and tell me your due date. I will handle the poses. You handle showing up.
