This is the question I get asked more than any other, usually followed immediately by "are we too late?" The good news is the answer is simple, and you are probably not too late. The slightly tricky part is that there are two dates to think about, the day we shoot and the day you book, and they are not the same.
The sweet spot is between 28 and 36 weeks. By then your bump is unmistakably a bump and not a question mark, which matters for the photos. And most moms still have decent energy in that window, which matters for the experience. Past 36 weeks, things get less predictable. You are more tired, less comfortable, and babies have been known to ignore the schedule entirely.
If you are expecting twins or more, move everything up. Somewhere between 24 and 28 weeks usually works better, since your bump shows earlier and the fatigue arrives sooner.
And if your pregnancy comes with complications or you are simply having a rough stretch, the calendar bends. We shoot when you feel good, not when a blog post says we should. Comfort wins every time.
Here is the part most posts skip. If your ideal shoot date is week 30, you do not want to start looking for a photographer at week 29. Reaching out around week 18 to 22 gives you the pick of dates, time for a real conversation about what you want, and zero panic if the weather forces a reschedule. Maternity sessions have a hard deadline built in. The baby does not wait for an opening in anyone's calendar.
Booking early also means we can plan around the season. Central New Jersey is generous in spring and fall, with comfortable temperatures and colors that do half my job for me. Summer works in the right light, and winter has its own quiet kind of beautiful. If you have a specific vision, an outdoor session in October or golden hour in a field, the earlier we talk, the more likely we land it.
